I am admittedly, not the greatest cook. I have improved over the years – especially since having kids – did you know providing them with healthy meals is a requirement of parenthood? If I had, maybe I would have rethought some things… But in all seriousness, I have mastered about ten meals that are on our meal rotation.
Growing up and even into my early 20’s, you wouldn’t find me in the kitchen (aside from grabbing an easy snack). Cooking has never been my favorite, it’s more of a necessity and chore – and don’t get me started on the mess afterwards… But baking? Baking is worth all the mess it comes with.
Reflecting on my childhood, I remember baking pies with my grandma. I have always loved sweets – from chocolate to baked goods, I love them all. And learning how to make delicious pies sparked my curiosity with baking; although, I didn’t follow through on my love for it until I met my husband. On one of our first dates he told me that apple crisp was his favorite dessert and that started my true passion for baking (we often joke that my apple crisp is what made him fall in love with me). Over the years I have perfected my apple crisp and many other recipes: gingerbread cookies (a holiday favorite), chocolate chip cookies and most recently, raspberry pie. It took me a few tries to get my pie crust just right, but I must say it even tastes better than the raspberry pie from our favorite bakery.
I love finding new recipes and adding my own twist. It is trial and error to get it exact, but I enjoy the challenge. Luckily for me, my husband finds the same joy in creating new meals for our family and he is a great chef! Sharing the burden of the kitchen is definitely a blessing, but I doubt my feelings of cooking will change. Cooking a meal for thirty minutes that results in another thirty minutes to an hour of cleanup isn’t worth it to me… but baking a melt in your mouth chocolate cake topped with homemade frosting and sweet berries? That is worth the cleanup every time.
