For almost five years, a closet off of our theatre room bothered me. It was a room we kept our holiday decorations, luggage and other random items we simply didn’t want to look at. However, the closet is quite big – 11 feet x 5 feet to be exact – and filling it with unused items felt like a waste…
Our kids have a lot of toys between them – so much so we’re overflowing. We sort and donate any we can as our kids grow, but some of their favorite toys are big and we had trouble finding a shared space where they can be enjoyed. So, I decided to do some decluttering to see if I could turn a “junk closet” into a playroom for the kids. And thus began a week of sorting, organizing and trips to the dump/recycling depo.
Once the room was empty, it felt freeing. From a cluttered mess to an empty canvas, it is nice to have a blank space to create. After a couple days of various different setups, I finally finished the “secret playroom”. The room was just wide enough to fit the kids playhouse which became the center of the room and luckily the other favorites (kitchen, slide and ball pit), fit nicely as well. It is now the kids favorite room in the house – an extra bonus is having a room where the ball pit can be somewhat contained.
I’m sure this “room” will see many more transformations as the kids grow older and I can’t wait to get more creative in the future!
Do you have a cluttered space and are looking to transform it? It’s never too late to transform it into something creative: from play space to office; games room, bar, or even a reading nook – create a happy space in which you can thrive.
