The snow has melted, the birds are chirping, and the sun is trying to peek through the clouds – spring is near! Although it isn’t officially spring, doesn’t mean you can’t get a head start on your spring cleaning. Not sure where to start? Follow my spring cleaning checklist below:
#1: Go through all cupboards & drawers. Clean thoroughly & discard any broken or unused items.
I try to ensure our cupboards and drawers are decluttered throughout the year, but when I make a point to check all of them, I often find hidden spots that have accumulated junk.
#2: Pull out appliances to clean underneath & in behind.
Have you ever done this in your home? I will admit, I am guilty of not doing this annually. When we have done it… the things we found had us questioning where they even came from!
#3: Thoroughly clean inside all appliances.
I try to do this every couple of months… but with busy schedules, corralling little ones, and trying to find time to relax, I would be lying if I said some of our appliances don’t suffer as a result. Doing a thorough clean is a must, especially when you have little ones that produce endless crumbs and spills.
#4: Clean all closets. Sell/donate/discard any clothes & items that no longer fit or are no longer worn/used.
I go through the kids closets every season. I sort through what is no longer used/worn, and donate clothes that we no longer need. It also helps me make a list of items I will need to get for them. For my husband and I, I go through our closets and dresser annually.
#5: Dust & clean all hard to reach places that are often forgotten throughout the year (light fixtures, fans, blinds, photos/art work, etc.)
I dust weekly, but there are some spots I forget about – especially the ones up high!
#6: Clean out garage & storage sheds. Declutter & organize.
We are one of the only houses on our street that park both of our cars in our double garage. A lot of families use their garage for additional storage. There is no harm in that – especially if you need additional space, and/or have a large family. Just ensure you clean and declutter the space so that unused items don’t accumulate.
Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be overwhelming; and you don’t have to clean everything at once. Make a checklist of areas you have overlooked in the past year. Clean, organize, and head into spring and summer with a decluttered mind!
