My husband and I have been at odds as to what we were going to do with our rec room wall. We went back and forth with ideas, but ultimately left it as a blank slate while we finished furnishing our home. However, this past weekend we finally made a decision on what we wanted, and we made it happen…
We decided to paint the wall two different colors. We opted for a dark grey on top, with white on the bottom. We already had a dark grey couch, and most of the décor we have downstairs would accentuate the colors we chose nicely. I helped Shaun tape the walls to prep for paint. We took a level along the center of the wall to ensure the split where the grey met the white was even.
Shaun painted the grey in about four hours. He did two coats of the grey, and we let it dry overnight. The following morning we hung three photos on the wall to fill in the space and then Shaun painted the bottom of the wall white. The white took three coats to fully cover.
Next, we bought five 1x2x8 white trim boards. We cut the boards into four pieces each to create 1×3 rectangles. We glued them together and let them dry overnight. The following day, we sanded down the glue, painted the rectangles to match our white wall, and once again left them to dry overnight.
When the rectangles were dry, we measured the wall and rectangles to find the appropriate spacing, and used a level to ensure they were even. Using a nail gun, we applied them to the wall, and used wood putty to fill in any marks left by the nail gun. Finally, my husband caulked the rectangles to make them flush with the wall.
It was a process, and we had to spread it out over the course of five days as we worked around our children’s bedtime, but we are happy with the final product. We have yet to decide what our next home project will be, but I’m sure we will find inspiration again soon!
