Looking to update a room in your house? Not wanting to spend a lot of money, but also give it a unique feel? This was the case for Shaun and I. When we moved into our home, we knew the back room downstairs was going to be our “theatre room”, and cozy nighttime escape. But having only moved in with our primary bedroom furniture, other rooms in our house took priority.
Then, a little over a year ago, we found inspiration in creating a feature wall and finally finishing the room. We went to our local Lowe’s, found a paint color we liked, and bought 15 1x2x8 white trim boards and wood glue. When we got home, we taped out the back wall in preparation for painting.
We then painted the back wall in our desired color (luckily our wall was light, and the color we chose was dark, so we only had to do one layer).
Afterwards, we measured out the trim boards, and penciled in lines at 45 degree angles to make the appropriate cuts resulting in 2×2 squares. We then glued the squares together and waited 48 hours for the glue to cure.
Once dry, we sanded down the excess glue and painted the squares the same color as our back wall. While waiting for the squares to dry, we took measurements and found the appropriate spacing for placement of the squares on our wall. Finally, we used a nail gun to secure the squares into place.
We are quite happy with the way it turned out, and get compliments frequently from guests. Shaun also added Philips Hue Lightstrips to the back of the TV and a Philips Hue Motion Sensor on a separate wall of the room; upon entrance, the lights turn on and accentuate the space.
Our next home project is adding another feature wall, this time to our rec room. We are still deciding what design we will go with, but are going to be painting it two different colors – stay tuned!
