Packing for your child seems like a never-ending task. Despite the check-lists and preparation, it always seems you miss something. And even though it is the middle of summer, with the sun beaming down, I always like to be prepared for a snow storm (just in case, right?). Jaiden and I leave for 5 days on Saturday morning, our first ever “long” trip! I have begun setting things aside so that I don’t forget them the day of, and am trying to have everything readily available so that this trip goes as smooth as possible with Jaiden.
Jaiden does not like to sleep away from our house. Mind you, we have only ever taken him on trips overnight, so he has not been able to fully adjust to a couple of days elsewhere. I am hoping after a night or two, he will settle in, and realize it is OK to sleep somewhere other than his crib (but, I am holding my breath). So what do I do to prep and pack before a trip away with a little one?
- Make A List. I always have a list on my phone of my “Must Have” items to pack. I even have lists categorized depending on the weather. When it is summer, sunscreen and hats are a must on my list; as well as towels, bathing suits, a lifejacket, and a place for Jaiden to crawl around (a large towel or play mat).
- Start Preparing Early. This can make it less chaotic (especially if you tend to pack the night before, or day of). I start setting things aside that we don’t use on a daily basis the week leading up to our getaway, so that I don’t feel rushed and overwhelmed the day of.
- When You Have A Infant/Baby/Toddler: Over-pack! Yes, over-pack. Why? Because infants, babies, and toddlers, often have unexpected mishaps. Whether they are still in diapers, learning to use the potty, or potty-trained… things happen. Not to mention the mess that comes with eating on the go! It’s better to have a lot of extra clothes, just in case.
- Pack Toys & Books. Even though your vacation may take you somewhere that your child won’t need extra toys, the toys, books, and other things to keep your child occupied are there for your travel to your destination. Jaiden doesn’t like to sleep in the car. He only likes to sleep on his stomach, so having toys, books (and snacks), available is a must to keep him entertained and avoid a meltdown.
- Snacks And Liquid To Stay Hydrated. If you’re a parent you know the importance of snacks. Kids are always hungry it seems. Jaiden will have just had a full meal and then try to steal my dinner. Having snacks on hand, as well as water and milk, are essential in keeping your child full, hydrated and happy.
- Know Your Child’s “Comfort” Items. If you are planning on a long trip away, pack things that bring your child comfort, and remind them of home. Even children who are experienced travellers will end up missing home, and having little things that remind them of home can help (i.e. their favourite blanket or stuffed animal).
- Bring An Extra Bag. If you’re like me, coming home from a vacation seems like you have a lot of extra things. It may not be the case, but often times, I am not as methodical or organized as we are preparing to come home as when we left. Bringing an extra bag to have more space to put things is always useful!
- Assign Tasks. Your children may not be old enough to be in charge of packing items just yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use people who are! Ask your partner, or even a friend to come over and help you, so that you can ensure you have everything you need to make the trip enjoyable!
Although packing sometimes feels like an Olympic sport, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming, if you prepare ahead of time. Packing to me, doesn’t seem that bad, it is the unpacking once I get home that is often what I dread the most. What are your packing tips and tricks? Share them below!
